All you need to know about the price of sapphire

Multiple elements influence the price of sapphire, however, based on the 4Cs: clarity, carats, color, cut. Discover useful landmarks to better understand the value of this resplendent stone.

How do you estimate the price of a sapphire?

Carats increase prices a lot, but 1 carat of sapphire (0.20 grams) has no fixed price. There are several factors that cause the quality to vary and therefore the Sapphire price. This quality certainly depends on the purity (inclusions visible or not visible to the naked eye), but also on the size made, the country of origin and the color, which may be more or less sought after depending on the period.

Rare sapphires are expensive, especially when the quality is admirable and they weigh more than 2 or 3 carats, as with the Sapphire Padparadscha. Sapphires are more common, but a stone can have remarkable characteristics and if, in addition, it is a unheated sapphire, the price is soaring.

About the price per gram of a sapphire

The estimate of price of raw sapphire and cut stones, regardless of their origin or color, are made in carats and not in grams.

We can say that if you see a sapphire with a price in grams, it's very suspicious. This is not a practice of professionals in the gemstone market, anywhere in the world.

If people are looking for a blue sapphire with price per gram, for example, it is usually due to confusion with the price of gold or other metals, which are valued according to a weight in grams, at least for those who use the metric system. It would be totally unusual to talk about Sapphire price in grams, in a context of buying or selling.

1 carat of sapphire at what price?

You can find a 1-carat sapphire for less than €1,500 or more than €6,000... This is why it is crucial to be well advised and to buy a sapphire with a gemology certificate.

You should know that the Sapphire carat price is determined in part by the size of the stone. That is to say, the bigger/bigger it is, the higher the price of sapphire per carat. For precious stones, the carat price increases with the volume of stone. And Sapphire is a stone whose price varies a lot according to the origin, more so than for other precious stones. The same goes for color.

What is the price of blue sapphire?

The best known is the blue sapphire, but it has several shades, the rarest of which is called “royal blue”. Overall, The price of a dark blue sapphire is higher. It is never the only parameter, but pale sapphires are not popular.

Of course, carats increase sapphire prices tenfold, but their origin can strongly influence them: for the same color and quality, a Ceylon sapphire is in principle more expensive than a Madagascar sapphire. That said, the highest prices are generally those for sapphires from Kashmir, where beautiful and generous gems are found.

All in all, The prices of blue sapphires of excellent quality are the most considerable.

The price of pink sapphire

The popularity of pink sapphire is only growing. It does not reach that of blue, but that makes it a popular stone and prices are rising. A 1-carat pink sapphire can cost 1,500 to 3,000€ or more, if it is of a beautiful, intense and homogeneous color (and not heated). Cheaper pink sapphires tend to be fairly clear, which doesn't stop them from being lovely, sometimes with pastel hues.

How much does a teal sapphire cost?

Again, the Price of a teal sapphire depends on the 4Cs, but like each of colors of sapphires, it has its own specificities. For example, there are teal sapphires very popular bicolours.

In general, this sapphire color is (relatively) affordable, although prices are above average, for stones of unusual clarity and particularly well-cut.

The prices of green sapphires

The prices of green sapphires can be significant. These are not common stones, even in countries rich in sapphires.

This color has a variety of shades and therefore, a lot to choose from. It is not uncommon for the Price of a green sapphire is higher than for the other colors, of the same quality and weight, although some criteria may change the situation.

Know the price of purple sapphire

As with other sapphires, there is not necessarily a striking difference between Purple sapphire prices and others, judged according to the same quality criteria. It is possible to find a purple sapphire at an affordable price. However, exceptional stones of this color weighing around 2 carats are sold for nearly €10,000 (and much more for rare gems).

What is the price of a yellow sapphire?

Regarding the yellow sapphire, we're looking for bright yellow called canary, a bright yellow, and that can make all the difference, especially if it's unheated and beautifully cut. However, many yellow sapphires are superb without necessarily having high prices. Moreover, yellow sapphires cost a bit less than many other sapphires, but especially blue ones.

How much does an orange sapphire cost?

The most expensive orange sapphires are darker and more intense, but certainly not brown. Mostly, they are heated stones. They are among the rarest sapphires and may have pink undertones. The authentic orange sapphire Pure and honest is very expensive, even more so with carats, because you mainly find small stones. But very exceptional specimens are rare, at higher prices than those of blue sapphires.
